RECRUITING IS THE NAME OF THE GAME

In 2018, the University of San Francisco and architecture design firm Gould Evans approached Shield about developing a locker to help their Division I WCC basketball teams compete nationally in the daily battle for recruits.

Shield graciously accepted the challenge.

The San Francisco Dons’ athletics leaders were in the midst of plans to renovate the men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms on the South side of the former War Memorial (now the Sobrato Center). The donor-funded project required a state-of-the-art locker room and team space for both practices and home games. The outdated facility needed a stunning, modern renovation to help bring USF’s tradition of athletic excellence into the 21st century.

Shield worked collaboratively with Gould Evans and the San Francisco Dons’ athletic department to design and construct 34 basketball lockers. Channeling the Jesuit commitment of taking a wholistic approach to an individual’s education, the design teams came up with clever value engineering solutions to deliver USF’s vision while staying “in bounds” on budget. A larger single pocketing frosted door reduced the cost of hardware while maintaining the “trophy case” display space for game day and recruit visits. Brand accents were incorporated into split custom door pulls and subtle ventilation intake routing of the cushioned bench seat faces. And, a solid surface body with metal-to-metal connections guarantees utmost performance of the new lockers where others commonly fail.

In total, 34 solid surface lockers and player lounge casework found their new home at the Sobrato Center, serving current and future Dons for decades to come.
