STRENGTH, DURABILITY, AND PROTECTION
In 2016, The University of Kansas and architecture design firm HNTB approached Shield to help design an affordable, long-lasting locker that holds up to intense use and attracts top recruits. Shield graciously accepted the challenge.
The two million dollar renovation of the Anderson Family Football complex included plans to completely modernize the player’s locker room and lounge. Athletics leaders were keen on the fact that the existing facility hadn’t been renovated since around the release of Apple’s first iPhone. In order to stay competitive in a Power Five Conference football program, two themes emerged: the locker room needed to be contemporary, incorporating the latest technology amenities for modern student-athletes into a space that was just awesome; and, it had to deliver long-lasting durability under intensive use to reduce overall cost-of-ownership and better protect the investment.
Shield worked with HNTB and the university’s athletic department to design and construct 110 hybrid solid surface and wood lockers. Collaborative design sessions were used to pick every detail, feature, and material on the locker. Features like seamless custom displays, integrated power and USB ports, and active ventilation for soiled equipment required precision coordination with design and installation contractors. Common locker failures were avoided by building the body of the locker from waterproof solid surface, which provides seamless joints and allows Shield to embed their nearly unbreakable patented hardware connections. Not to mention, KU’s locker investment is protected by Shield’s unmatched limited lifetime warranty.
In total, 110 lockers found their new home throughout the Anderson Family Football Complex, an awe-inspiring jewel for recruiting with industry-leading performance.
