REVIVING AN NBA FRANCHISE – THE CHARLOTTE HORNETS
The Challenge
In 2014, Dimensional Innovations (DI) approached Shield about developing a stunning solid surface locker for the Charlotte Hornets that would redefine industry expectations of locker aesthetics, performance, and features.
Shield accepted the challenge.
The Design
The then Charlotte Bobcats were in the process of a massive franchise update, returning to their original, 1988 franchise roots as the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets needed a locker that could stand up to intensive use, complement the luxurious environment of the redesigned Spectrum Center, and showcase the return of the Hornets brand. They also needed a high-functioning locker for the players’ needs within a practical renovation budget. Players needed plenty of room for garments, shoes, technology, and other personal items without losing valuable display space.
The Solution
Shield worked collaboratively with DI and the Hornets to design and construct the first 100% solid surface locker body on the market (eighteen of them to be exact), and did so in less than two months. Digital prototyping was critical. The design team worked simultaneously with Shield to select hardware, refine details and test each aspect of the lockers in small stages while maintaining buy-in from the client. A creative application of finishes helped create two distinct zones with a buttoned-up look, maximizing player storage capacity and prime brand/display real estate. The Hornets were so impressed with solid surface, the design team worked to fit-out the bathrooms and lounge with Shield’s signature solid surface casework and custom furniture.
The Results
In total, 18 lockers, various casework, and unique furniture components, all made from solid surface, complemented the high-end brand image of the new Charlotte Hornets. This locker proved that Shield’s concept of mass customization is real.
