World Class Lockers For A Nationally Ranked Program
The University of Kansas and architecture firm Gould Evans undertook a new volleyball facility after the 2018 season. With a short timeline of eight months of total construction, each stakeholder needed to be aligned to deliver a best-in-class facility for a growing program.
Of course, the locker room was one of the building’s focal points, and a custom locker was desired to deliver the student-athlete experience the University and Coach Bechard expected.
KU’s Nationally Ranked Program
KU’s Volleyball team, growing its national presence, was coming off a recent final four appearance. The new space needed to match the caliber of team that KU was quickly becoming.
Shield worked with coaches, facility personnel, equipment staff, and a select group of student-athletes to deliver a one of a kind locker for the team.
Custom Locker Details
The custom lockers take advantage of the durability and clean-ability of solid surface while allowing the design team to construct the visual in a way that’s best for them. Shield also incorporated details like drip edges for toiletries and mirrors and lights to keep the athletes at their best.
The locker body is constructed out of solid surface, and wood is introduced to fit the room’s desired aesthetic. This hybrid build model has been used by the NBA, the NFL, and hundreds of collegiate locker rooms successfully.
KU’s new locker room exceeded the expectations of the coaches, staff, and athletes. The new facility will help KU competitively recruit new athletes and staff for years to come.
